Behind the scenes:

Day in The Life of a Hilti Store Rep

Hilti Store Liverpool

Continuing our ‘Day In The Life’ series, Store Representative Andy Abernethy gives us an insight into what it’s like to work in a Hilti store and the many reasons why he loves it.

I’ve heard the sound of a V8 muscle car and I’ve even read reviews online, but nothing really compares to the first-hand experience of burying your right foot in a convertible Ford Mustang on Highway 1 in California. Excitingly this is exactly what I got to do this summer and it set me thinking – I actually do this all the time!

Now, don’t get me wrong, I don’t own a muscle car and I don’t have a second home in The Golden State, but I do play a huge role in bringing Hilti to life for trades men and women in Liverpool – turning theory into experience. It’s one thing to know that our SF 10W-A22 ATC drill driver produces up to 120Nm of torque but it’s another to pick it up and drive an 8.0 x 300mm timber screw in a railway sleeper off-cut on its lowest (that’s right, lowest) torque setting. In the stores, we pride ourselves on having a huge selection of Hilti tools and products ready to demonstrate and it’s a real pleasure in my job to see the satisfaction our customers get from first-hand experience of Hilti quality.

Another part of my role in the store is to answer questions and offer advice. We see thousands of construction professionals throughout the year from all different sectors and come across a massive variety of applications. While we won’t know the entire construction encyclopaedia (if only there was one!), chances are we can help, we know someone who can or we can point you in the direction of some online literature / a handy Hilti app.

As with any other store-based role, it’s part of my job to keep the place in good working order and that means managing stock levels so our customers can get what they want when they want it, setting up engaging displays and demonstration areas as well as processing orders and making outbound calls to customers in our area. Perhaps one of the most important jobs I do, even though it’s seemingly insignificant, is putting on the filter coffee every morning – you cannot underestimate the impact of a free cup of coffee on your way to a jobsite on a Thursday morning!

Often referred to as a ‘construction worker’s sweet shop’, one thing you can be assured of is you’ll never be bored in a Hilti store: there’s always something new to see or try. Plus, it’s always nice to catch up with your regulars over a nice brew.

I moved to Hilti with a background of being on the tools as a refrigeration engineer and more recently working in construction PR and marketing. While there are many transferrable skills I have brought from previous roles, starting my career as a Hilti Store Representative has been a steep learning curve. This being said; I honestly believe it is one of the best places to start in the company because of the high level of diversity.
